With an area of 4,299 km², the département of Alpes-Maritimes is located in the région of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.

The préfecture is Nice and the sous-préfecture is Grasse.

Neighbouring departments are Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Var.

Alpes-Maritimes Tourism

The department's name is derived from its location between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea (Maritime Alps).

Although eighty per cent of Alpes-Maritimes is mountainous, few who visit the department of Alpes-Maritimes know anything more about the region than the coastal strip of Cannes, Nice and Menton.

Maybe they've sniffed some perfume in Grasse or viewed what inspired Matisse, Soutine, Chagall, Renoir, Signac, Modigliani, Dufy and other artists around St-Paul-de-Vence but rarely have they thought about really getting up into the hills.

Cote d'Azur

The French Riviera benefits from a Mediterranean-type climate, characterised by exceptional sunshine almost 300 days a year and mild temperatures for most of the year.

Mercantour

The Mercantour National Park was created in 1979 and covers some 685km² (including Verdon and Ubaye in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence).

Visit the villages perched in the valleys of Roya, Bévéra, Vésubie, Tinée, Haut Var/Cians to discover some architectural gems.

Saint Martin Vesubie:
There's an interesting little Musée des Traditions Vésubiennes in the village.

Alpha, Le Temps du Loup:
The wolf returns to Le Boréon, near St Martin Vesubie. If you can't visit Alpha in person then the website is a beautiful presentation.

Roya Valley

The Roya Valley runs up alongside the Italian border.

Popular places to visit are the lakeside town of Breil sur Roya, the monastery and ancient streets of Saorge and the frontier-town of Tende - reachable from Nice on the Train des Merveilles.

Sospel:
Once an important staging post on the royal road from Nice to Turin. Travellers crossed the Bévéra here, over a toll bridge that was built in the 13th century. The old bridge was partially rebuilt after the Second World War and now houses the tourist office.
